Beef and Red Wine Pie

Serves6 girls for dinner (or 2 guys and 1 girl)


1 onion
4 garlic cloves
1 kg beef (1/2kg mince 1/2 kg chunks)
2 tbsp plain flour
2 tbsp tomato paste
125 mL red wine
500 mL beef stock
3-4 puff pasty sheets



  1. chop onion and saute in large frypan
  2. crush garlic and add to onion
  3. cover beef in flour
  4. remove onion from pan and set aside
  5. brown beef on high heat, reduce heat and return onion to pan
  6. add tomato paste and red wine and stir, simmer to reduce wine
  7. add beef stock herbs and pepper, stir
  8. simmer to reduce liquid and thicken sauce then remove from heat and alow to cool slightly to thicken sauce
  9. grease pie dish
  10. line pie dish with pastry
  11. tip beef into pie dish
  12. cover with pastry
  13. glaze pastry with milk
  14. bake at 200C 30-40 minutes or until pastry is golden
  15. eat hot


can also add sliced mushrooms about 200g when you return the onion to the pan

also good with bacon, slice 4 rashers and add to pan with beef

pie will keep for a few days in the fridge

serve with roast veggies, steamed greens or a salad
